Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus is out now on Nintendo Switch. It is, without a doubt, the best-looking portable version of the yellow pellet-muncher’s adventures to date.

Originally launched back in 2016 for the PS4, XB1 and PC, this isn’t your dad’s Pac-Man.

Whilst the game retains the mazes, ghost and pellets of it’s classic forbear, Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus has more in common with its predecessor, Pac-Man Championship Edition. The gameplay is faster and the maps more varied.  The emphasis is on clearing the mazes before the timer runs out rather than avoiding ghosts. The ghosts can slow you, but won’t necessarily kill you.

The result is a blazingly fast game, with eye-popping visuals that’ll have you holding your breath as you frantically navigate the maze scooping up the pellets.

Starting up the game you are presented with two options, either the regular single-player Championship Edition 2 or the two-player Championship Edition 2 Plus 2P.

The single player game can be played as time attack or adventure mode. Time attack gives players five minutes to get the best score on one of the unlockable themed mazes. Adventure consists of a series of mazes that must be cleared before the timer runs out.

Plus 2P mode ups the ante, allowing 2 players to play in co-op against the ghosts using the Switch’s Joycons. Plus 2P mode can also be played with the AI controlling the other Pac-Man.

The visuals are spectacular, retaining the classic Pac-Man look, but not afraid to slip into a full-on 3D when that action ramps up. As a portable game, it’s perfect and easy to pick up a play when you have a moment.

It’s amazing that we are still playing what is essentially the same 2D maze game almost forty years since Pac-Man first appeared in the arcade. Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus on Nintendo Switch continues the iconic character’s legacy with style and finesse. Be it on your TV or on the bus, you never have to put down the best version of Pac-Man yet.
