Musical interlude: Kurt Shanks…I know that man!

This isn’t a music site, I know. But I got a press release in my email box today that triggered a WTF moment that I thought I’d share.

Auckland singer/songwriter Kurt Shanks, who I used to work with when I lived on the Shore, has just released the video for We Shall Have Another Day, the featured track from his debut EP which will be out in the first week of August.

Lord of the Rings inspired geek movie coming soon

The Fellows Hip: Rise of the Gamers

We already have web-based TV show The Guild, featuring geekdom’s favourite redhead Felicia Day. Do we need a full-on movie inspired by playing massively multiplayer online role-playing games (thankfully, and more commonly, known as MMORPGs or even better, just MMOs).

The folks who made The Fellows Hip: Rise of the Gamers thought we did. The movie is about a band of friends who embark on journey to a convention in order to participate in a Lord of the Rings Online  competition. Along the way the heroes find themselves in many situations mirroring those found in Tolkien’s tales. The film-makers sought, and gained, approval from both Middle-Earth Enterprises and Turbine, the original developers of the LoTRO game. The movie actually features footage taken directly from the game.

We also have a new NZ URL to call home, so we are also in the process of switching over from wordpress.com to the new URL. More on this soon.

Be seeing you.

New Captain America TV spot has chilling revelation

America f**k yeah!!!!

Of all the super-hero movies this (northern hemisphere) summer, the only one that I’m super excited about is Captain America.

Having a young family means that I now choose my movie theatre trips carefully. Thor, X-men: First Class and Green Lantern can all wait until Blu-ray. But not Captain America. In preparation for the movie, I recently took a look at director Joe Johnston’s last period super-hero picture, The Rocketeer. After twenty years, I swear that movie is even better than I remembered it! I’ll be writing more about The Rocketeer in a few days time.

Marvel Studios have been releasing a steady flow of TV spots for Captain America: The First Avenger. Each one effectively the same shots edited differently. TV spot 8 is a little different and offers up a sequence that should get every single fan of the Marvel character just a little excited.

Director Jon Favreau interviews Harrison Ford about Cowboys and Aliens.

Harrision Ford in Cowboys and Aliens

It has got to be said that Harrison Ford is looking old. In recent years he seems so distant in his interviews that I wondered if at was all about the paycheck and contractual obligations for him now. My bother was involved in a radio interview with Ford a few years ago (the lucky bastard). He told me just how difficult it was to actually record what was being mumbled from Harrision Ford’s mouth.

This seems to have all changed now. In an interview with Jon Favreau wgo, in Ford, is interviewing one of the stars of his new movie, Cowboys and Aliens, it seems that the old Han Solo charm is back.  Ford comes across as engaged and generally happy.
