Busy week!

What a week it has been. After a few month unpacking as sorting out things Sydney-side, I’m back into games and other geekery. I’ve been reviewing, getting exclusive game hands-on, watching movies and getting excited about the upcoming EB Games Expo in Sydney.

For starters I turned in my review for adidas’ miCoach. A title that is the bane of spellcheckers, everywhere. It’s more Kinect fodder, which means more arm waving, pseudo-fittness, training. Watch the first four minutes of Finnish space Nazi film “Iron Sky”!

I’m getting really excited by the community-created sci-fi comedy feature, Iron Sky.

Iron Sky tells the semi-plausable story of a modern day Nazi invasion from their secret base on the dark side of the moon, where they have laid in wait for almost 70 years.

RIP Moebius. Jean Giraud has passed away

RIP Moebius

The inspirational French artist Jean Giraud AKA Moebius passed away on 10 March 2012 in Paris. He was 73.

Moebius was most famous for his contributions to the magazine that he co-founded, Métal Hurlant, known in the English-speaking world as Heavy Metal. Moebius’s distinctive art style inspired the likes of Ridley Scott, who used his designs in the 1979 film Alien and inspired the visual style of Scott’s sci-fi followup, Blade Runner. Ralph McQuarrie has passed away

RIP Ralph McQuarrie

The success of Star Wars owes everything to the look and feel of the universe that the films portrayed on the big screen.

Space Nazi film Iron Sky to premiere in Berlin!

Space Nazis, oh yes please!

The Finnish film-makers behind the odd Star Trek parody, Star Wreak: In the Pirkinning have been hard at work on their space Nazi comedy flick, Iron Sky.

Iron Sky tells the semi-plausable story of a modern day Nazi invasion from their secret base on the dark side of the moon, where they have laid in wait for almost 70 years.

The film is a joint production between Blind Spot Pictures and Energia Productions in Finland,  27 Films in Germany and New Holland Pictures in Australia. .

The film will premiere at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival which runs from the 9th to the 19th of February. Considering how sensitive Germans are about their Nazi past, the film is sure to get  few tongues wagging and knock a few jaws out of joint. Vic B’Stard’s week in review: game patches, Skyrim, Weta Cave, Tintin and Assassin’s Creed Revelations

I like Skyrim...a lot!

Game patches are, generally speaking, a good thing. Being human, we all make mistakes. At least when a mistake is made in a bit of game code, developers have the opportunity to fix things.

At the moment I’m patching Battlefield 3 on the very same laptop that I’m writing this text. I’ve already patched the game on my desktop. I say patched, but we are not talking about a couple of megabytes here. The patch for EA’s shooter weighs in at around 4GB. In little old NZ where nobody actually has any money to spare and internet data is closely monitored (as well as charged for at ridiculous rates), EA’s 4GB patch will eat into a considerable amount of the average Kiwi’s meager internet data limit.

Lucky me then, as most of my business is carried out via the intertubes, I have a larger that usual data limit giving me the luxury of downloading the same astronomical patch twice. But even I, in an attempt to limit my internet bill, tried to lower my internet data cap last month; only to raise it back up this month. Doctor Who Christmas Special- mini prequel video

Now I love a bit of Doctor Who. Granted it’s an acquired taste and yes, you probably shouldn’t bother taking another look at any old Who prior to Paul McGann’s TV movie in the 1990s.

A few years ago I had another go on my favorite Tom Baker story, Logopolis (which saw the be-scafed one transform into Tristram from All Creatures Great and Small), not good; some things are best left to nostalgic memories. For thirteen seasons, from the late 1978 to 1991, TV audiences around the world were glued to their sets as the trials and tribulations of Texas oil tycoon family, the Ewings unfolded in front of them.
