Why you should play The Order: 1886

Sony Computer Entertainment have been teasing us with The Order: 1886 since they first announced the PlayStation 4 way back in February 2013. Over the last two years the publisher has been drip-feeding scant details about their cinematic third-person shooter set in a steampunk re-imagining of Victorian London.

In the run up to the game’s launch Sony’s hype machine was working on overdrive. So much so that when word of a five hour campaign length, excessive quick-time-events and a couple of hours of cut scenes broke the internet went wild and skinned the game alive. Company of Heroes 2: Ardennes Assault PC review

When Company of Heroes publisher THQ went to the wall in 2012, the future of Relic’s sequel to their acclaimed 2006 WWII PC real-time strategy game seemed in doubt. Sega stepped in, themselves no strangers to the genre being publishers of the Total War games, and in June 2013 they released Company of Heroes 2.

Late last year Sega released Company of Heroes 2: Ardennes Assault, the first standalone expansion for the game. Continue reading Company of Heroes 2: Ardennes Assault PC review

Forza Horizon 2: Storm Island DLC Xbox One review

Last year Forza Horizon 2 sucked me into its world and held my attention long past the point at which usually I abandon a game and move onto the next. In unleashing Turn 10’s sublime vehicle handling physics onto the open road, Sledgehammer Games provided me with a much more fulfilling experience than that of Forza 5’s constrained circuit racing.

With the release of Forza Horizon 2’s DLC expansion, Storm Island, I finally have just the reason that I needed to return to Microsoft’s Xbox One exclusive racer. Continue reading Forza Horizon 2: Storm Island DLC Xbox One review

Elite: Dangerous PC review

In the early 80s the original Elite was my first experience of an open world adventure. Gaming sandboxes may be something we take for granted now, but back then the idea that I could just do whatever I wanted in a game was a brand new and rather amazing concept.

I spent hours flying around trading goods and fending off attacking space pirates. Almost a decade later, Frontier: Elite 2 allowed me to explore the galaxy and land on planets. Continue reading Elite: Dangerous PC review

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris PlayStation 4 review

Lara Croft is back with another adventure in Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, the sequel to 2010’s top-down arcade shooter/puzzler Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.

The absence of “Tomb Raider” in the title is what separates Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris from the recently rebooted Tomb Raider franchise. Indeed, having Lara dressed in her old trademark blue top and shorts, as well as being voiced by Keeley Hawks – who also voiced Lara in Tomb Raider Legend, Underworld and Anniversary – would suggest that this is your dad’s older, more experienced Lara Croft. Pro Evolution Soccer 2015 PC review

Does Konami’s latest entry in their long-running Pro Evolution Soccer series offer players a viable footballing alternative to EA’s FIFA series?

I can’t think of a more soul-destroying game development job than working on a PES game. The knowledge that no matter what you do, no matter how good your game is, it’s never going to beat EA’s latest FIFA entry when it comes to exposure or sales. The Crew PlayStation 4 review

Never in the history of video games have racing fans been gifted such an enormous playground as they have in Ubisoft’s The Crew.

With the open road ahead of them players can push the pedal to the metal and embark on a road trip from the east coast of the United States to the west in an epic journey that’ll likely take an hour or more to complete.

The world of The Crew is a vast and rather impressive achievement. To pack the entire United States into a game console (albeit scaled down somewhat) and without any loading times is rather special.

Rabbids Invasion: The Interactive TV Show Xbox One review

Rabbids Invasion is series of animated shorts produced by Ubisoft in association with Nickelodeon. The cartoons are based on Ubisoft’s Raving Rabbids video games, themselves a spin-off from the classic Rayman franchise.

The Rabbids, themselves are basically foot-high stylised rabbit-like creatures that stand on two legs. They don’t speak English, they just utter words in their own language, including their trademark “bwahh”. Instead they communicate with the audience via expressions- which the animators skilfully use to instil some amusing, but at the same time darkly comical and sometimes vicious, personalities.
