FIFA 14 gets a Brazilian for the World Cup… or something.

It was hard to resist not turning my nose up at 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, EA’s World Cup edition of their popular franchise. Is was, after all, the third FIFA console game that I been confronted with in the last seven months.

FIFA 14 gets a Brazilian for the World Cup... or something.
He shoots, he scores!

First we had the excellent FIFA 14 on the last-gen systems, then the Xbox One and PS4 versions with all their updated bells and whistles. Now we are back on the Xbox 360 and PS3 for this apparent retooling of FIFA 14 with a Brazilian festival atmosphere.

And what an atmosphere the game has. All the usual rather reserved FIFA menus have been given a Mardi Gras make over. Even during dead ball situations the camera cuts to madcap supporters in the crowd with their crazy hats and fans watching huge screens in their home countries. The Elder Scrolls Online Imperial Edition Unboxing

The Elder Scrolls Online Imperial Edition Unboxing
The more money than sense edition?

It seems with each Elder Scrolls game Bethesda try and outdo the last with an extravagant premium collector’s edition. For the franchise’s first foray into the online realm, The Elder Scrolls Online, they have pulled out all the stops with their Imperial Edition.

I remember having to put up with just a little book, “A Pocket Guide to the Empire”, a “making of” doco and a coin for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion CE. Still, I’m not complaining, the 200-odd hours I spent in Cyridill rank as some the most fun I’ve had playing a video game.

For The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Bethesda delivered a collector’s edition in a huge box containing a massive statue of the dragon Alduin perched atop a word wall from the game. The executive package also contained a lavish faux leather-bound tome packed full of art and designs. Continue reading The Elder Scrolls Online Imperial Edition Unboxing

Thief PC review

Thief PC review
Sneaky bastard

I reviewed Thief for Techday.com; their current editorial policy is for articles to be no more than 500 words. From a writers point-of-view this short length means cutting out all the crap, all the clever but superfluous bollocks that may stroke the scribe’s ego, but adds nothing for the reader.

Thief was a hard game to review. For most of my journey through the city the game sat at the limits of my engagement. Ironically for a franchise that pretty much introduced stealth gaming, so many other games have since done it much better. In the end we have a game that, once it gets going, is a lot of fun; but at the same time made me want to go back and play the far more superior Dishonoured. Continue reading Thief PC review

South Park: The Stick of Truth Xbox 360 review

South Park: The Stick of Truth Xbox 360 review
Filthy bastards

For Seventeen years the South Park animated TV show has been lampooning and abusing literally everyone, regardless of race, religion or political affiliation.

The show’s trademark and sometimes puerile humour pushes the boundaries of what is considered bad taste, with characters like Mr Hanky the Christmas Poo and an appearance by Jesus Christ himself. Continue reading South Park: The Stick of Truth Xbox 360 review

Week in review special: Titanfall launch

Titanfall unleashed!

So I found myself nursing the first hangover that I’ve had in years, struggling to get a Turtle Beach wireless headset to work.

It was all Titanfall‘s fault.

The hangover was the result of EA’s Titanfall launch party which I was using as a test to see if I could navigate myself home via Sydney’s public transport total smashed. I did get home, although I had to walk the last kilometer in the pissing rain. Continue reading Week in review special: Titanfall launch

Preparing for Titanfall on Xbox One

Preparing for Titanfall on Xbox One
Here they come!

There’s no doubt about it, Titanfall is the Xbox One’s most important game launch to date. I’d go as far as to say that, other than the launch of the consoles themselves, the launch of Titanfall is the most important game launch this generation of consoles.

Heralding the arrival of this next big thing, Microsoft are making some improvements to the Xbox One experience and you need to be prepared. You don’t want to be messing about setting stuff up in the early hours when you should be piloting huge mechs.

So here’s what you need to know. Continue reading Preparing for Titanfall on Xbox One

Titanfall: Single-player gaming in a multiplayer world

Titanfall: Single-player gaming in a multiplayer world
Incoming!

A multiplayer game with single player aspirations, is Titanfall the must-have Xbox One experience that it EA Games and Microsoft are saying it is?

When the Xbox One was unveiled, Microsoft’s original vision for an always on-console created such a backlash that the IT giant was forced to radically alter their machine prior to release. It seemed that the world was not yet really for an internet dependent console gaming experience. Continue reading Titanfall: Single-player gaming in a multiplayer world

Week in review- PS4, Thief, Freedom Cry, Fable Anniversary and Titanfall

Prepare for Titanfall

So I finally got a PlayStation 4. I missed out one getting one at release and since then I’d been waiting for the right moment when I can just drop the cash and walk out of the shop without having to wait for the next shipment or any of that bollocks.

Technically it’s a nice machine, but it’s still housed in a cheap, shitty plastic box just like the Xbox One. The Dualshock 4 feels solid, unlike the Xbox One controller, which feels like it’s going to fall apart in my hands.
