EA Games has a lot riding on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Their use of what is a premium movie licence has not exactly produced stellar results. Whilst Star Wars: Battlefront 2 was a vast improvement on the first game, it still had its issues.

For Fallen Order, EA have conscripted Respawn Entertainment (Apex Legends/Titanfall) to produce a single-player focused Star Wars game. No strangers to narrative video-games, Respawn, being made up from veterans from the Call of Duty series, are an inspired choice to create this new chapter in the (canon) Star Wars mythos. The Outer Worlds immerses players into a slightly tongue-in-cheek sci-fi role-playing adventure on the far side of the galaxy. Players take on the role of one of thousands of unfortunate colonists aboard the colony ship, Hope.

During the journey from Earth the ship’s engines malfunction. Instead of arriving on a new world in the Halcyon System, to start afresh ten years later, the ship arrives fifty years late. The ship’s owners, Halcyon Holdings, covers the malfunction up and hides the ship and its occupants, still frozen in cryosleep. Since its inception, Activision’s Call of Duty franchise has barely put a foot wrong. It’s had its ups and downs, development dramas (they lost of most of the Infinity Ward team), and narrative challenges. Call of Duty has taken us from the Second World War, though to the modern age and beyond into outer space. As the writers upped the ante, the plots got all the more outlandish.
