It’s been an intense month of virtual reality for me as I get to grips with Sony’s PlayStation VR2, experiencing both the highs and the lows of the best VR headset for consoles. There has been, I believe, some unwarranted criticism regarding the Sony headset’s dependency on a wired connection to the PlayStation 5. Bethesda ANZ recently invited me to a media-only preview session of Arkane Austin’s upcoming vampire shooter, Redfall.
I’ve been a huge fan of Arkane Studios since their breakout title, Dishonored. With Prey, the French developer’s US arm, Arkane Austin, branched out to create a game that retained the essence of the studio’s signature style, but with a more grounded and less stylised look. Redfall, again from Arkane Austin, is very similar in that it is almost a traditional shooter, but with a little more meat.
The PlayStation VR2 brings high-fidelity VR gaming to the PlayStation 5. In the PS5, we finally have a console powerful enough to deliver AAA VR games and experiences without the technical limitations that faced the original PlayStation VR headset. There are still compromises, but you’ll still find similar compromises in premium PC VR headsets that are more than twice that of the PlayStation VR2. Kerbal Space Program 2, the long-awaited sequel to the smash-hit original is now available in early access.
For the uninitiated, Kerbal Space Program 2 follows its predecessor in being a physics-based space program simulation.
