The guys over at Ain’t It Cool News are reporting that Sir Ridley Scott is going to be directing a Blade Runner sequel.

I’m not sure what is up with acclaimed British director Ridley Scott and his recent desire to return to his old material. Sir Ridley is currently working on Prometheus, which marks his return to the Alien franchise that he created back in 1979.

Scott must have balls of steel to take on the challenge of returning to works that defined the genre. Whilst Alien and Blade Runner were fresh ideas in the 70s and 80s, the look and feel of both films have been emulated countless times. No film since has a monster as outright scary as the Alien and Blade Runner’s vision of a dystopian future is now THE vision of a dystopian future.

Scott’s no hack, continuing to turn out high quality movies and doesn’t really have no need to return to a sure-thing in order to save his career (unlike Sir Peter who needs The Hobbit more that we do after the over-long King Kong and less than impressive The Lovely Bones). I can only assume that he’s having some sort of mid-life crisis (even though he is 74, but I’m happy for Sir Ridley to carry on producing Alien and Blade Runner movies until he’s 148).

Whatever his reasons, news of more Ridley Scott Blade Runner its great news. Sadly there’ll be little chance of Harrison Ford returning as Deckard, given the well publicised friction between the actor and the director during the filming of Blade Runner.

Like with the upcoming return to Ridley Scott’s vision of the Alien universe, I’m very excited to see what he does with a Blade Runner sequel.
