Battlefield 4 PC Review

Battlefield 4 PC Review
A return to the frontline

Since 2002’s Battlefield 1942 EA Games and Swedish developer DICE have been providing gamers with a unique multi-role first-person shooter experience. With Battlefield 2 they replaced the traditional WWII FPS setting with modern combat.

The more narrative-based (and console friendly) Bad Company spin-offs kept the franchise going for the six years until Battlefield 3. Two years later and we are returning to the battlefield with Battlefield 4.

Battlefield 4 has been built with the next-gen consoles in mind. The game’s creative director, Lars Gusavsson as good as told me that when I spoke to him last month. But it is also the product of community feedback – the addition of commander mode, for instance – and a chance to refine the living battlefield environment. Continue reading Battlefield 4 PC Review

Batman: Arkham Origins Definitive Edition swag unboxing (lite)

The Dark Knight returns again

Whilst I should be reviewing games and writing up interviews, I thought I’d take a bit of a break to do an old-fashioned unboxing of the EB Games exclusive (well, here in Australia, anyway) Batman: Arkham Origins Definitive Edition.

I pre-ordered this special edition on Xbox 360 ages ago as I can be a sucker for fancy game packages. Ironically I’d been playing the PC version of the game for a week for my review on shanethegamer.com when I got a text from EB saying that the Definitive Editions had been delayed, but I could still pick up my game in-store and await the swag when it arrived. Assassin’s Creed 4: Black flag – interview with director, Ashraf Ismail, and senior game designer, Michael Hampden

Pirates of the Caribbean

It’s not long now until we get to experience the next game in the acclaimed Assassin’s Creed saga. Last year, in Assassin’s Creed 3, we followed Conner Kenway as he witnessed, first hand, the birth of the United States.

For Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag we travel back in time, buckle our swashes and dive headlong into the adventures of Conner’s wayward grandfather, the pirate Edward Kenway, as he pillages his way across the Caribbean. It’s an interesting and rather radical departure for a series that started out running long the rooftops of the Holy Land.

The other week I caught up with Ashraf (Ash) Ismail and Michael Hampden, the director and the senior game designer on Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, to talk pirates and next-gen consoles. Interview with Lars Gustavsson, creative director of Battlefield 4

Battlefield chatter

It has been two years since Battlefield 3 launched to critical and commercial acclaim. With huge maps crammed full of modern combat vehicles, the game was the most visceral attempt to bring open 21st Century battlefield combat to multiplayer gaming.

At the end of the month EA’s DICE studio will unleash the celebrated series’ forth incarnation, Battlefield 4, on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3; with next-generation versions waiting in the wings for the new consoles’ launches in November.

I caught up with Battlefield 4’s Lars Gustavsson at the recent EB Expo in Sydney to talk about the game. Continue reading Interview with Lars Gustavsson, creative director of Battlefield 4

EB Expo 2013 round-up

EB Expo 2013 round-up
The greatest show on Earth!

From Friday 4th to Sunday 6th October Australian gamers descended on Sydney’s Olympic park for their annual video gaming extravaganza, the EB Expo 2013. The show ran for three-days giving fans ample opportunity to get their hands on upcoming games from the likes of EA, Ubisoft and Activision, as well as the opportunity to try out the new Xbox One and PlayStation 4 hardware ahead of their launches next month.

I spent two days at the show, the Friday and Saturday sessions. It was pretty full-on.

Week in review: let the games begin

Week in review: let the games commence
Shit’s getting real!

This is a tiny little post as I’m too busy at the moment to write anything meaningful on this here site. Between other things I ‘m currently working on a piece about the weekend’s EB Expo that I’ll be putting up on here later this week.

Right now I’m concentrating on getting some shit together for Shanethegamer.com and Techday.com. I’ve got about a hours worth of interviews to transcribe, most of which were with North Americans- who can fit about five hundred words in a minute. Continue reading Week in review: let the games begin

Week in review: The Rockstar legacy

Week in review: The Rockstar legacy
The Rockstar Legacy

To say that I’m excited about the imminent arrival of Grand Theft Auto V would be an understatement. I’ve been following the trailers and images for months, soaking up anything and everything that I could find about the game.

Last week, when I should have been reviewing The Bureau: XCOM Declassified and Total War: Rome 2, I instead decided to write something about Rockstar Games. In the days that followed I played every Rockstar release from the first Grand Theft Auto right up to Max Payne 3. I had one goal in mind: to get dome insight into what we are going to get next week, with GTA V, based on what Rockstar have done in the past. Continue reading Week in review: The Rockstar legacy

Week in review: Fuse, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, and Total War: Rome 2

The reviews are!

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Week in review, mainly because it have been a while since I’ve reviewed anything. I was, however, pretty sure that some of my missives had slipped out onto the intertubes without me making reference to them in this here column.

Let me just take a look.

It seems the last time I mentioned my reviews was back in June when I was more preoccupied with E3 than anything else. The last batch featured Metro: Last Light, Injustice: Gods Among Us (a game with the shittest non-inclusive DLC season pass ever) and the surprisingly good Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. Continue reading Week in review: Fuse, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, and Total War: Rome 2
