Review round-up!

I’ve been flat out playing the last knockings of the Q4 games releases and nutting out reviews for the last few weeks, leaving no time to write any sort of missives on this here website.

I held back on my SimCity review for a while, as I didn’t want to give the game a bad review score only for EA to suddenly pull their finger out and sort the bloody thing out. Well I waited, and I waited. You can read the review on Shanethegamer.com here. Snake’s back!

That’s right Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is on it’s way. And no, you won’t need to shell out on a new PlayStation 4 or Xbox Whatever.

Hideo Kojima’s new game is coming out on current gen consoles. Not only have Konami released this great new, but they’ve also released a trailer from the game…and it’s great. It’s a shame that the definitive voice of Snake, David Hayter, isn’t voicing this one. That being said it should be hard to find someone with a suitably raspy voice capable of muttering Kojima’s incoherently babbling dialogue. Continue reading Press Pass Special: Holy Shit! More bit-sized bits of news from the mail bag!

After another trawl through my virtual mailbag to see what is being games are being punted this week, I’ve found a few interesting morsels that I thought I’d share with you.

Again, rather than be professional about it and scrub them up into some sort of self-indulgent twaddle like I usually do, I’m offering the information just as it was passed to me.

Up this week we’ve a load of Aussies that are off to Hollywood to play Call of Duty, some Tomb Raider multiplayer maps, Activision’s The Walking Dead game, a Bioshock Infinite video, the second Assassin’s Creed 3 single-player DLC pack, Trials Evolution on the PC and DC Comics’ Injustice Gods Among Us.

Off we go, then.

Spec Ops: The Line- the responsible shooter

Spec Ops: The Line - The responsible shooter
War is Hell!

Each Christmas for the last few years I’ve engaged in a new tradition alongside the feasting on ham and Christmas pudding. Every holiday season I find myself buying a load of games that I don’t really want and some that I’ll probably never even play.

Yes folks, I’m talking about the Steam Christmas sale. Every day during the Christmas holiday those crafty folks at Valve offer up whole catalogues of games at rock bottom prices. In amongst the bargain-basement tat can be found the odd gem. Past sales have netted me the complete Civilization IV collection and the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games.

Last Christmas, I netted Sniper: Ghost Warrior Gold Edition ($1.99), Hotline Miami ($4.99) and Spec Ops: The Line. Of the three it’s Spec Ops that is the standout title, and one that I feel that I should have got back when it came out earlier last year. Week in review: Aliens: Colonial Marines, Crysis 3 and Sniper: Ghost Warror 2

Colon-ial Marines?

Every now and again I get a game that I find difficult to review. Now I’m not talking about  the time I reviewed that Xbox 360 Lips karaoke game, I’m talking about game the I find so annoying I just want to spout venom all over it.

Well, I had one recently. It’s taken me a month to review Aliens: Colonial Marines. Why? Because I initially found the game so horrible I wasn’t able write a proper review, only a whiny rant.

You see, basically, Sega and Gearbox have managed to screw up what should have been a game right up there with the likes of Killzone 3 and the possible even Halo. Instead of that level of greatness we have a game that, despite six years in development, looks god-awful and plays as just a slightly above average FPS. Week in review: SimCity launch and Dead Space 3

Sim-shitty?

A few days away in central Australia meant that I missed the Sim City launch day excitement. As it turns out I missed very little and, at the same time,  it was all waiting for me when I got back.

This week hasn’t been a good week for EA. What should have been the glorious launch of the first proper SimCity in the best part of a decade turned into a technical and PR shit-storm. Continue reading Week in review: SimCity launch and Dead Space 3

Dead Space 3 PC Review

Dead Space 3 PC Review
Third time’s a charm

I haven’t done a PC review for a while, but having a newly reinvigorated gaming rig is changing all that; and what better way to start than to take a look at EA Games’ sci-fi horror splatter-fest, Dead Space 3. The following review should be up on Techday.com’s Games Console pages anytime soon, but it the meantime you can check out the all the gory details below.

Dead Space 3 continues the unfortunate adventures of Starship engineer Issac Clark, and his battle against creatures called the Neromorphs. Set in 25th Century, the Dead Space series is a third-person sci-fi horror game very much in the style of the Doom franchise, but borrowing from films like the Alien movies and John Carpenter’s The Thing.
