EA Games has a lot riding on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Their use of what is a premium movie licence has not exactly produced stellar results. Whilst Star Wars: Battlefront 2 was a vast improvement on the first game, it still had its issues.
For Fallen Order, EA have conscripted Respawn Entertainment (Apex Legends/Titanfall) to produce a single-player focused Star Wars game. No strangers to narrative video-games, Respawn, being made up from veterans from the Call of Duty series, are an inspired choice to create this new chapter in the (canon) Star Wars mythos. Read Dead Redemption 2 released last year on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to critical acclaim. As full-on Wild West simulator, the level of detail and the depth of the game was a bit too much for some players. The action, whilst intense, is punctuated by long dialogue-heavy journeys on horseback, and less bombastic tasks such as hunting and crafting.
PC owners, somewhat more attuned to this level of deep gameplay experience have had to wait all this time to get their hands on a game that, if I’m honest, seems like it was made for PC. It’s a shame that the last game never made the leap from console to PC as, even now, the original Red Dead Redemption still holds up as an Xbox One Enhanced title. Just in time for the new Star Wars Game from EA, Seagate have released their Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order Xbox One Game Drive.
The cynic in me believes that no storage solution says, “I’m probably paying too much for this” than a Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order Xbox One Game Drive. And that’s probably true. This year, EA’s NFS developer, Ghost Studios, takes us to Palm City, a very thinly veiled version of Miami, for a bit of street-racing with Need for Speed Heat.
Heat puts behind us some of the odd design choices employed by EA Games’ Ghost Studios in the past. There’s no cheesy live-action cut scenes. There are, also, no shoehorned card elements in the game and it’s free from loot boxes. Upgrades and new cars are obtained through gameplay progression and not gimmicks. The Outer Worlds immerses players into a slightly tongue-in-cheek sci-fi role-playing adventure on the far side of the galaxy. Players take on the role of one of thousands of unfortunate colonists aboard the colony ship, Hope.
During the journey from Earth the ship’s engines malfunction. Instead of arriving on a new world in the Halcyon System, to start afresh ten years later, the ship arrives fifty years late. The ship’s owners, Halcyon Holdings, covers the malfunction up and hides the ship and its occupants, still frozen in cryosleep. Since its inception, Activision’s Call of Duty franchise has barely put a foot wrong. It’s had its ups and downs, development dramas (they lost of most of the Infinity Ward team), and narrative challenges. Call of Duty has taken us from the Second World War, though to the modern age and beyond into outer space. As the writers upped the ante, the plots got all the more outlandish. On 5th November, PC owners will be getting their own enhanced version of Red Dead Redemption 2. The developers, Rockstar, themselves, have deemed the PC release to be the definitive version of their open-world Western epic.
Since its release a year ago, Rockstar’s Wild West simulator has been my go-to game. I’m playing it on the PlayStation 4 Pro, and it looks astounding. That vast expansive environment that is protagonist Arthur Morgan’s realm never gets old. With Red Dead Online, Rockstar have extended the gameplay with a narrative multiplayer mode.
